- In this talk I will provide an overview of our work on the role of the necessarily present crystal symmetries on the physics of topological band insulators. Starting from their more fundamental role in the general classification scheme of such materials, I will then physically motivate the consequences of this perspective. In particular, I will elucidate a deep correspondence between dislocations, being the unique topological defects associated with the translational symmetry breaking of the lattice, and the resulting space group classification. This defect analysis by and large revolves around the formation of special modes that culminate in new interesting phenomena, including the formation of novel exotic semi-metallic states.
