- Beschreibung
- About the research of Professor Morelli: At the present, it is known that oxidative phosphorylation machinery (OXPHOS) is located in the mitochondrial inner membrane but, in the last years, several studies demonstrated its ectopic localitation in numerous mammalian cell membranes, suggesting an extramitochondrial ATP production to supply cell processes. OXPHOS proteins would get to the extra-mitochondrial respiring membranes through heterologous fusion of mitochondria with endoplasmic reticulum, then following the pathway of membrane secretion. Such data shed new light on visual transduction, neural conduction supported by myelin, the bioenergetics of plasma cells, platelets, helping to understand their metabolism prompting to the formulation of new paradigms in many fields of biology.
